The use of two monitors, known as dual monitoring, has been around for over a decade. The idea, behind having two monitors, is to allow individuals to accomplish their work in a more efficient productive manner. One of the downfalls is the amount of space that two decent sized monitors will take up on any given desk.

Samsung is known for their high quality and variety of monitors. They have recently added, to their already popular product line, a brand new concept - a dual monitor setup in one. This system consists of a 22-inch and 7-inch monitor that takes up the space of only one 22" unit. This new concept is to provide the same efficiency that two full sized monitors offer. The idea behind it is to use the 7-inch monitor for secondary applications like instant messaging, and the 22-inch monitor for your primary applications.

The primary monitor, 22-inch, has a resolution of 1680 x 1050, a response time of 5mx, and a contrast ration of 1000:1. If you know your monitors, you know this is an average monitor. The big difference with this monitor, from single units, is the fact that you must connect it with a USB port along with a DVI, HDMI, or VGA cable.

The 7" monitor is not quite as glorified as the 22", but that is to be expected considering it is considerably smaller. This monitor has a 400:1 contrast ration, 800 x 480 resolution, and a response time of 30ms. Considering major applications will not run on this monitor, these numbers should be sufficient.

The secondary monitor attaches nicely to the primary monitor, taking up much less real estate on your desk. It is attached via a pivotal arm that allows you to rotate the monitor to the perfect position. Additionally, the 7-inch monitor can be adjusted to either landscape or portrait layout, whichever you prefer.

An added bonus, to this setup, is the fact that the 7-inch monitor can be used as a standalone unit. This counteracts the purpose of the design, but could be useful in some situations. For example, it can be used as a secondary laptop monitor. For those who travel or need portability, this is a great-added benefit.

With the integration of a webcam, speakers, and microphone, the Samsung SyncMaster 2263DX can also be used as a telecommunication platform. There is no need to install additional hardware of software; it is ready to be used out-of-the-box. (The 7-inch monitor is great for the video portion of web conferencing.)

For around $550 you can purchase one of these new SyncMaster 2263DXs. If you have priced monitors, you know that this is a bit of a steep price for a 22-inch monitor. You could easily pick up two separate full sized monitors for the same price.

Remember the theme song from the Rocky movie, "The Eye of the Tiger"?

When Rocky fought his opponent he had the focus of 'the eye of the tiger'. When that song was written they couldn't have had any idea the significance it would take on when a new Tiger took the world stage and changed sports forever.

I don't care if you are a golf fan or a sports fan or if you think there is too much hype over this one particular athlete-yes golfers are athletes.

Tiger Woods is a force to be reckoned with. I could write a book about not only his accomplishments in the sports world, but also his accomplishments as a human being, but many books have already been written. In fact I wrote about Tiger in my book, "Breakthrough to Success."

Look at what Tiger does in terms of how you live your life. Could you stand up to the level of excellence that Tiger requires of himself? If you raised your expectations, do you think you would be performing head and shoulders above your competition?

I've always been a huge fan of his because not only is he a consummate professional, he has such intense focus that you can see it on his face when you watch him on TV. I have also had the pleasure of standing just a few feet from him on more than one occasion and watching that focus in person.

Over and over again I heard the announcers at the tournament talking about how nobody would believe this if it was a movie. It would just be too much of a fantasy and the whoever wrote a screenplay that played out like this would be laughed out of a movie mogul's office. I don't know if I've ever seen a movie or a sporting event with this many interesting characters and twists and turns.

Tiger is larger than life and his life is richer, more nuanced, and more interesting than any movie script. And this weekend he was Rocky, but he wasn't fighting an opponent, he was doing what his dad had taught him. He was playing full out because that's the only way to do it.

There were so many amazing shots from this one tournament. You can probably find them all on Youtube. But it's not about the shots. It's about the measure of the man. During the tournament some of his fellow golfers, who should feel really ashamed of themselves right now, wondered out loud through their pettiness and jealousy how hurt Tiger really was.

Tiger on the other hand downplayed his injury to not take the focus off the Open while he played through incredible pain that would have made almost any other player call it quits, especially when he was so far back that it didn't look like he had any chance at all of winning.

And yet, Tiger not only didn't quit, he forced a playoff and played another 19 holes on Monday. And then he made the impossible inevitable by winning...again!

Watching him play in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines for 4 days instead of the usual 3 was a treat and at the same time painful. My heart ached every time I saw him wince when he hit the ball or when his caddy pulled him up by the arm when he couldn't get up by himself or when the pain of taking another stroke had him almost doubled over in pain.

And I wondered how he could keep going, where did he find the inner strength to focus enough to pull it out day after day?

Ironically during the tournament there was a commercial running with audio of his dad talking about how Tiger would never meet anyone else as mentally tough as him in his entire life.

He certainly proved his dad right that weekend. I'm sorry I won't be seeing him play the rest of the summer, but I know he'll be back next year better than ever because striving for excellence is just his natural way of being.

Salary negotiation early in one's career can have a huge impact on the affluence they have in the long run. The biggest impact is determined by the salary they negotiate before their first day of work in their job.

This should be considered whether it is a first job out of school or a mid-career job change. Beyond that, there are impacts even when you are working for an employer that you are very happy with. Not engaging in salary negotiation at the right time can have real financial impact.

Throughout your career, you may earn pay raises and promotions within the company that you work for, but for example, when the company offers scheduled raises, as many companies do, the impact of the starting salary with that company is huge.

This is not only applicable to your first job salary and subsequent scheduled pay increases but also to salary difference you may get when you changes roles within an employer. You may transfer into a career requiring significantly increased effort, more duties, or higher responsibilities, and the salary you had negotitated beforehand can genuinely influence the salary you earn in the new job.

As an example, imagine a person starting a new job as a QA analyst in a high tech company somewhere in America. Suppose that person begins with a starting salary of $45,000. Most likely that person will have to put in 6 months to a full year before they are offered their first pay raise. Suppose it is a 10% raise which would be HUGE at many employers. The employee would gain an additional $4500 per annum based on that increase.

Now imagine that same employee started at $55,000 or even higher. That same pay raise of 10% would provide the same person $5500 additional salary per year. With the first salary, the employee would still be under the $50,000 salary band after one full year of work and after a 10% increase, while in the second situation the person would be at over $60,000 per annum after a 10% pay hike.

Imagine the compound impact of these two starting salaries on the person's earning potential. First let's examine a four year timeline, all other things being equal (that is, assuming no pay raises and no promotions). The employee earning $45,000 will have earned $180K in gross salary in four years. The person earning $55K will have earned $220,000 in 4 years. That is a $40,000 difference just because of where the person started in terms of salary.

Now imagine a 10% raise after the first year and consider the impact as the person advances through their career. The person with a higher salary in the beginning will always be ahead of the person with the lower starting salary, all things being equal (e.g. same title, same job performance). The person with the better salary negotiating will be moving ahead faster than the person starting with the lower salary. This impact amplifies with each subsequent year considering the same percent annual pay raise for each.

When negotiating a pay raise, if an employee earning $50,000 earns a 5% raise without negotiating anything extra, that might acceptable. Now consider the impact if the person gets a 15% pay raise because they have been a superstar in the job and they have all the supporting market facts and a performance record to justify it. That employee will have negotiated compensation - $7,500 in an increase versus just accepting $2500. Project that 10 years into the future, and there is a blatant $50,000 impact on the person's earnings.

Many experts suggest that it is better to try negotiating a raise or an improvement to the compensation package than to simply receive the package that is offered. The first offer is often the lowest offer and can be improved with salary negotiation. This negotiation must be done with care and must be well based with a supporting case for the difference.

It must also consider factors such as market, company guidelines, and professional performance. However when done well, it can really pay off. Remember to consider the value of all factors of compensation when asking for an increase. Some people truly value time and quality of life, while others are willing to venture out and accept stock options in lieu of extra salary.

As a former systems engineer I spent a lot of time getting to the core of some very complex problems. The systems Ive designed and written have run several multi-million dollar corporations and have had billions of dollars run through them.

One of the reasons that I am good at diagnosing and fixing problems in these systems is because of a simple concept one of my professors made sure we understood.

The Six Types of Aptitude Tests in Psychometric Assessments

Psychometric assessments are given by approximately 65% of employers to find the best candidates for jobs. Work experience and longevity on a job are no longer the only considerations an employer uses when looking for a potential employee. Assessments are believed to be accurate indicators of future job performance.

There are two distinct parts of a psychometric assessment: aptitude tests and personality assessments. This article will discuss the six types of aptitude tests.

Aptitude tests assess an individual's verbal and numerical abilities as well as abstract reasoning capabilities. These tests are always multiple choice with definite right or wrong answers. They are also timed tests.

There are more than 5000 aptitude tests available to employers with new tests being added on a regular basis. All of these tests are diverse in their names and acronyms, but they can all basically be classified into six distinct types:

verbal reasoning numeric reasoning abstract reasoning spatial reasoning mechanical reason data checking

We will describe each aptitude test and explain why an employer would want to give this test to applicants.

Verbal Verbal ability is tested because the employer needs to know if a prospective employee communicates well. These tests usually include grammar, analogy (the association of words), and following written instructions. There may also be tests in spelling, reading comprehension and completion of sentences.

Numeric Most employers are interested in an applicants ability in basic mathematics even if this ability is not used much on the job. These tests may involve basic arithmetic such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing skills. Also tested is the ability to recognize number sequences and some mathematical skills such as fractions, decimals, etc. Calculators are normally banned while taking numeric tests.

Abstract reasoning This test measures intelligence and the ability to learn new skills or information quickly. Diagrams are used to test logical sequence.

Spatial This test is given only if the job requires the applicant to have good spatial abilities. This test measures the ability to manipulate shapes mentally.

Mechanical This test requires specific knowledge of levers, pulleys, gears, springs, tools, electrical circuits and shop arithmetic. This test is given only if the job requires this specialized knowledge.

Data checking Data checking measures the ability to quickly and accurately find errors in data. Two columns of information are compared and determined if they are the same of different. This test is usually given to clerical and data entry cnadidates.
