Is it True That Motorcycle Helmets Are Safe?

By Frank Medley

There are many big debates among motorcycle riders. Are Harley's the best bikes of all time? How should you best care for you bike? But one of the most recent debates is that over whether motorcycle helmets are safe.

Every rider has heard a story of someone who was injured or killed not because they were in a crash, but because they were wearing a helmet. These stories remind you of the idea that seat belts also take more lives then they save.

These stories are little more than urban legends. It is possible that it happened once or twice, but if so, it was a freak accident. Motorcycle helmets are safe, and have helped to protect many lives.

Why are these stories so prevalent? Motorcycle riding is often linked to rebellion and freedom. Therefore many believe it should be their choice to wear a helmet, and chafe against helmet laws.

But this couldn't be further from the truth. Helmet laws are not designed to take away civil rights, but to promote safety. Every year, thousands of riders leave accidents scenes alive and healthy because of their helmet.

Motorcycle helmets are safe, but you can still be injured while wearing one. You get varying amounts of protection based on the type of helmet that you buy, and will need to see what is best for you.

Even when wearing a helmet, it is still your responsibility to ride responsibly. A helmet does not protect your neck from injury during a crash, and so even when wearing a helmet, you should still be cautious.

It is the truth that motorcycle helmets are safe. They will help to protect you if you are ever in an accident, and have saved many lives. Keep in mind that it is also the law in more areas that you must wear a helmet. - 20762
